It is nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice,” my mother would often say, and have been words that I’ve tried to live by.

For the past few months, it’s been my honor to be a “Girls on the Run” coach for this popular after-school program targeting girls in the 3rd-5th grade.  Teaming up with two other great volunteers, Mitzi and Jenn, and our girls at the Franklin Fine Arts School in Chicago; twice a week, we share a lesson and run.  The lessons equip the girls with skills to tackle bullies, negative self-talk, emotional health, gossip, peer pressure, body-image and other topics to prepare the girls for the social changes that come with puberty.

After our 30-minute lesson, we play games that involve running. While I signed up because I liked to run and felt I had something to offer the girls, it wasn’t long that I realized the girls are giving much more to me.   What are some of the nice things you are doing in your community?
